Gloss levels and finishes

FinishGloss (60°)Notes
Matt0–30 GULow reflection; hides minor marks and fingerprints well
Satin (semi-gloss)31–70 GUA common middle ground for architectural metalwork
Gloss71–100 GUEasy to clean; shows surface imperfections more
Textured (fine or coarse)Usually lowHides minor surface marks; harder to touch up invisibly

Gloss bands are from the QUALICOAT specification (measured to ISO 2813 at 60°). Metallic and special-effect powders vary by manufacturer; approve a sample.

Pantone and RAL

Pantone and RAL are separate colour systems owned by different organisations. There is no official conversion between them, and online conversions are only approximations. For coated metalwork, specify a RAL code (or the coating maker's own reference) and approve a physical sample.

How to specify a colour

  • Give the RAL code and name, for example RAL 7016 Anthracite grey.
  • State the gloss level (matt, satin or gloss) and any texture.
  • Say whether the steel is galvanised first (duplex) and which coating standard applies. See galvanising, powder coating and duplex.
  • Approve a coated sample on the actual material before production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular RAL colour for metalwork?

RAL 7016 Anthracite grey and RAL 9005 Jet black are two of the most widely specified colours for railings, balustrades, gates and window frames in the UK. Always confirm the colour against a physical RAL sample.

Are the colours on this page accurate?

No screen shows RAL colours exactly. The swatches are approximate sRGB values from an open dataset and vary with your screen and settings. Check against a physical RAL fan deck or a coated sample before approving a colour.

What is the difference between RAL and Pantone?

They are separate colour systems from different organisations. RAL Classic is widely used for coatings, paint and powder in construction. Pantone is mostly used for print, graphics and products. There is no official one-to-one conversion between them, so match a physical sample rather than a converted value.

What gloss level should I choose for powder coating?

Powder coatings are usually specified as matt, satin (semi-gloss) or gloss. Under the QUALICOAT specification these are 0–30, 31–70 and 71–100 gloss units at 60 degrees. Matt and textured finishes hide minor marks better; gloss is easier to clean but shows surface imperfections.

Does the same RAL code always look the same?

Not always. Gloss level, texture, the coating product and the substrate all change how a colour looks. Specify the RAL code, gloss level and finish together, and approve a sample on the actual material.
