Steel Quote Builder

List the steel for a job, get every weight, a cutting plan into stock lengths with the offcuts, and a printable supplier enquiry or customer quotation. Works on site, offline.

Quick answer

Add each section with its cut length and number of pieces. The Koyda Steel Quote Builder totals the weight (mass per metre × length × pieces), packs the cuts into the stock lengths you choose with a saw-kerf allowance, shows how many bars to order and the offcut from each, and prices it with your own rates per tonne for each section type. Print or send it as a supplier enquiry (no prices) or a customer quotation.

How it works

Weights, stock lengths and offcuts

  • Weight of each line = mass per metre × cut length × pieces, from the Koyda steel section tables.
  • Cutting plan: per size, cuts are packed into the allowed stock lengths, longest first; each bar uses the stock length that wastes least. Kerf is allowed between pieces (n pieces, n − 1 cuts) plus an end trim per bar.
  • Cuts longer than the longest stock length are flagged: order a special length (mills roll to 18.3 m and longer to order) or splice to an engineer's detail.
  • Price = weight ÷ 1,000 × rate per tonne, per line. Offcuts can be charged at the section rate. Extras, markup and VAT are optional.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does the cutting plan work?

For each size, the tool packs your cut lengths into the stock lengths you allow, longest first, choosing for each bar the stock length that leaves the least waste. It allows a saw kerf between pieces (default 3 mm) and an end trim per bar (default 10 mm). It then lists how many bars of each length to order, what to cut from each, and the offcut.

What stock lengths do UK stockholders carry?

Common UK stock lengths are 6.1, 8, 9.5, 11, 12.2, 14 and 15.5 m for beams, columns and channels; 6.1 and 12.2 m for angles; 6.1 m for flat bar (some 6.2 m); 6 to 6.2 m for black round bar; 6, 7.5, 10 and 12 m for hollow sections, with some box section in 6.2 m. British Steel rolls beams to order from 6 m to 18.3 m in 100 mm steps. Stock varies by supplier, so set the lengths your supplier carries.

Should I order stock lengths or cut to length?

Most UK stockholders will saw to length for a charge. Ordering cut to length means no offcuts to pay for or store; ordering stock lengths can be cheaper if you cut in-house and can use the offcuts. Switch between the two to compare tonnage.

Is the price a quotation?

Only if you make it one. Prices are your own rates per tonne multiplied by the weight, plus any extra lines you add. The tool does not know current steel prices. Section sizes must be confirmed by a structural engineer.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The schedule, rates and saved quotes stay in this browser on this device, and the PDF is made on your device. Nothing is uploaded; sharing, email and WhatsApp only send what you choose to send.

Reference only

Reference only. Values are nominal figures for the standard UK section ranges. Check them against current manufacturer data, and have a structural engineer confirm sizes before you use them in design. Koyda Ltd accepts no liability for decisions based on these tables. Weights are nominal. Prices come from your own rates and are not a Koyda offer unless issued by Koyda.
