Metalwork for Healthcare Buildings

Stairs, handrails, balustrades, plant screens and secondary steel for hospitals and care settings.

Rules that apply

During design and construction, hospitals and care homes that are at least 18 metres high or have at least 7 storeys are treated as higher-risk buildings. That means Gateway 2 approval from the Building Safety Regulator before work starts.

Healthcare stairs and routes need handrails that meet Approved Document M, and guarding designed to Approved Document K and BS 6180.

  • Stairs, balustrades and handrails
  • Roof plant steel and visual plant screens
  • Design information for Gateway 2 where the building is higher-risk
